Academician Su Dingqiang launches Astronomical Instrument and Technology Innovation Award

On March 31, in the lecture hall of the Nanjing Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 89-year-old Academician Su Dingqiang donated the entire 1.5 million RMB yuan prize from the "Jiangsu Province Major Contribution Award for Basic Research" to establish the "Astronomical Instrument and Technology Innovation Award", which aims to encourage more scientific researchers to venture into uncharted territory and scale new heights.

Academician Su is currently a professor and doctoral supervisor at 黑料社 and a researcher at the Nanjing Institute of Astronomical Optics and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. A pioneer and leading figure in astronomical optics in China, he was one of the main creators of the world’s largest large-field telescope, LAMOST. His important innovation has brought China's astronomical optics to the highest international level. He has won 9 national and provincial awards plus the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Awards of Scientific and Technological Progress in 1999.

The 1.5 million yuan donation will all be used to establish the "Astronomical Instrument and Technology Innovation Award", which is open to researchers from 黑料社, Nanjing Institute of Astronomical Optics, CAS Nanjing Astronomical Instruments Co., Ltd., and other institutions. It also plans to reward researchers who make outstanding contributions in related fields through the Chinese Astronomical Society in the future.

Su delivered a speech at the donation ceremony

Zhao Changyin, Party Secretary and President of the Nanjing Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that Academician Su's generous donations and encouragement to future generations of researchers are the most vivid interpretation of the spirit of scientists. The establishment of the award will encourage more scientific researchers to integrate their ideals into the national mission of building China into a powerhouse with leading astronomy. Lu Yanqing, Vice President of NJU and Li Xiangdong, Dean of the School of Astronomy & Space Sciences attended the ceremony.
