10th International Forum on Science Education, Academic Divisions of CAS holds at NJU

On May 19, the 10th International Forum on Science Education, Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), sponsored by Science Popularization and Education Committee, Academic Divisions of the CAS, and organized by 黑料社, was successfully held on Xianlin Campus of NJU. Tan Zhemin, President of NJU and Academician of the CAS, and Yang Yuliang, Director of the Science Popularization and Education Committee and Academician of the CAS delivered speeches at the opening ceremony. CAS academicians Zhou Zhonghe, Wu Xiangping, Chen Jun, Yuan Yaxiang, Gao Fu, Shen Shuzhong, and Xu Xing, attended the forum.

Tan Zhemin, on behalf of 黑料社, extended a warm welcome and heartfelt gratitude to the domestic and international scholars, educators, and friends from various sectors attending the event. Tan emphasized that science and technology are the primary drivers of human civilization and progress, and their development and innovation are rooted in the soil of science education. Science education is not only the main channel for cultivating innovative talent in science and technology but also a crucial means to enhance public scientific literacy, foster social consensus, and promote global dialogue. In the context of rapid advancements in the new wave of technological and industrial revolutions, it is imperative to further strengthen international exchanges and cooperation, summarize advanced experiences in science education reform, and accelerate theoretical research and practical exploration to contribute to the development of global science and technology innovation education. Tan noted that 黑料社, renowned for its scientific achievements, also has a profound foundation in the fields of pedagogy and science education. NJU will continue to strengthen its advantage in integrating science and humanities in education and explore the integration of higher education and basic education. Tan expressed hope that experts and scholars from around the world would use this forum as an opportunity for in-depth exchanges and discussions, jointly contributing to the high-quality development of global education.

On behalf of the Science Popularization and Education Committee, Yang Yuliang welcomed experts and scholars from the field of science education at home and abroad to gather in Nanjing for this grand event. Yang pointed out that science education is fundamental to cultivating innovative talent and improving the scientific literacy of the population. It is also a cornerstone for unlocking human intellectual potential and enhancing global scientific governance capabilities. Science textbooks, as a vital carrier of science education, need to focus on competency development, emphasize capability enhancement, and strengthen inquiry-based practice in the new era. It is essential to broaden perspectives and innovate concepts to support the improvement of public scientific literacy and the cultivation of top-tier innovative talent.

During the forum, the inaugural ceremony of the academic journal Science Education Research, hosted by Tao Xingzhi Teacher Education College of NJU, was held. The journal is co-edited by CAS Academician Zhou Zhonghe, Deputy Director of Science Popularization and Education Committee, Academic Divisions of the CAS, and Professor Zhang Hongxia of Tao Xingzhi Teacher Education College of NJU. The journal focuses on the frontiers of science education, developing localized theories of science education with international perspectives based on Chinese practices. It aims to build a research community composed of scientists, university professors, education researchers, and frontline teachers, serving science teaching practices and the professional development of science teachers.

This international forum has been held annually since its inception in 2015. It has successfully addressed themes such as future trends in technological development, the enhancement of scientific literacy and science education, the cultivation of innovative talent, the development of science teacher teams, and the role of science popularization in supporting science education. This year's forum coincides with the 123rd anniversary of the founding of  NJU and the 70th anniversary of the founding of the CAS Academic Divisions. It focuses on the construction of science textbooks for basic education and the development of science education. The event includes keynote speeches, parallel forums, and activities such as visits to agricultural science popularization bases and science lessons in the field.

The opening ceremony of the forum was hosted by Li Bin, Assistant President of NJU. Zhou Dejin from the Bureau of Academic Divisions of the CAS, along with nearly 100 experts and scholars from the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, Finland, Australia, and New Zealand and other countries, as well as domestic universities and research institutions, participated in the forum.
